A Jury Of Her Peers: A Character Analysis Essay As in the case of most, if not all, good allegorical stories, the primary impact of the tale is strongly influenced by the authors detailed characterization of the setting, as well as the characters feelings and passions. Certainly such is the case in Susan Glaspells story A Jury of Her Peers. Here we see a richness of characterization and setting that is elusive at first reading, but becomes clearer as the story evolves. In the final analysis, it becomes clear just who the jury is and the outcome of their collective verdict. It is by the use of allegorical and metaphorical rhetoric that the tension of the story is maintained so very well. Initially we are introduced to a woman, Mrs. Hale, who first seems cast as a central character, if not the central focus of the storys plot. By use of this literary diversion, the reader is intentionally mislead by focusing on the details of the patterns of her life and her overall guiding thought processes. For example, in Paragraph 1, we are shown the concept of Mrs. Hales inherent instinct for neatness, her bread all ready for mixing, half the flour sifted and half unsifted. Although this appears as a seemingly innocuous detail, it later becomes a key point as the plot develops, in that this trait seems to be directly opposite the nature of the accused. Mrs. Hale is shown to be a person of neatness and detail; no job is to be left unfinished, and high importance is attached to keeping a proper household. She is shown to be a strong woman, a woman of principle, who is concerned, if not outright ashamed, of her failure to be a good neighbor. In direct comparison to Mrs. Hale, we meet her fellow conspirator, Mrs. Peters, the wife of the sheriff. It is interesting to note that while the author makes it clear that Mrs. Hale is well suited for her role in life, that of a farmers wife, Mrs. Peters seems to be ill at ease being the wife of a lawman. She initially seems to lack the very force of character that is required of someone of authority, yet we understand as the plot is developed that she is instead a woman of equally strong convictions and character, and a person who can and will, in the final analysis, rise to the occasion. Finally, we are introduced to the character around which the story is centered, the accursed murderess, Mrs. Wright. She is depicted to be a person of great life and vitality in her younger years, yet her life as Mrs. Wright is portrayed as one of grim sameness, maintaining a humorless daily grind, devoid of life as we regard it in a normal social sense. Although it is clear to the reader that Mrs. Wright is indeed the culprit, she is portrayed sympathetically because of that very lack of normalcy in her daily routine. Where she was once a girl of gaiety and laughter,  it is clear that over the years she has been forced into a reclusive shell by a marriage to a man who has been singularly oppressive. It is equally clear that she finally was brought to her personal breaking point, dealing with her situation in a manner that was at once final and yet inconclusive, depending on the outcome of the legal investigation. It is notable that regardless of the outcome, Mrs. Wright had finally realized a state of peace within herself, a state which had been denied her for the duration of her relationship with the deceased. For purposes of character and plot development, the men in the story are superfluous for the most part. Their major contribution to the story is their good-natured contempt of women in general, and a womans ability for discernment. In this case, this ignorance on their part is a fatal flaw that is at the same time a familiar one. As humans, we all are egocentric by nature, and it is only through conscious effort and will do humans become able to fully see and appreciate those subtle nuances that form the complete human psyche. We also note that the mens approach to the investigation is based on their experience with other men for the most part. The subtlety of the female mind escapes their attention entirely; in fact, it is a subject of derision. We can easily visualize what occurred: Mr. Wright, after taking from his wife the only thing she truly still cared for, caused her to become distraught to the point of total distraction and fury. This is evidenced by the fact that, although the majority of the stitching was very precise, that one piece was a total mess. It is not an accident that this very piece of stitchery covered the final resting place of the bird. It is also very notable that the dead bird rested in a beautiful box that obviously was one of the last things Mrs. Wright considered of value in her life. The correlation between the bird and the box is very strong; both represented the loss of all that she ever held near and dear to her heart. The loss of them virtually simultaneously became the last straw for Mrs. Wright. We can imagine her state of mind as she sat in shock after witnessing the destruction of all that she had left in her life to love and hold dear. The fact that she put the bird in the box, that last remnant of happier times, increases the pathos experienced by the central characters as well as the reader. The visual mirror drawn by the author between the singing of the bird and that of the young Mrs. Wright strongly suggests the affinity between her and the singing of the bird. It wasnt the bird so much that kept her sane, as much as what it represented to her of her lost youth and former life. When the bird was needlessly killed, it was as if in doing so, Mr. Wright symbolically murdered the last vestige of his wifes innocence and youth which was the only element still sustaining her in her grim existence. In taking from her all that she truly loved, it was as if her husband physically destroyed the central core element of his own wife. This treatment she could no long tolerate. The authors masterful use of seemingly subtle and unrelated elements is woven into a complex  tapestry that illustrates fully the complexity that is the human condition. One can only hope that the jurys final verdict was a binding one.

Ache Of Marriage In "The Ache of Marriage," Denise Levertov attempts to explain the pain this marriage experiences. It is a pain that affects both emotional and physical states of being. Levertov describes the pain as if someone were reading her thoughts. Through Levertov's use of non-conventional form, the theme of the pain of marriage and overcoming that pain jumps from the page. The author divides the poem into two parts. On one hand, Levertov shows the difficulty in making a marriage last. She depicts how a marriage can ache and hurt. On the other hand, Levertov says that a blissful marriage as the ultimate goal. All the trial and tribulations a marriage endures prove to be worth it the sacrifices. Through her words, the dichotomy of marriage is personified as an actual human entity. It is a being, which aches in the "thigh and tongue" (2). Levertov's clever use of the literary technique of personification shows how marriage is hard but it can be a beautiful institution if sufficient time and energy are spent to correct what has been damaged. The beginning of the poem relates the downsides of marriage. She says, "thigh and tongue, beloved, / are heavy with it, / it throbs in the teeth" (2-4). This pain affects every part of the body. The use of the verb throb raises the intensity if the pain. The tongue aches because of the endless arguments a marriage experiences. The thighs ache because of the heavy burden pain places upon their shoulders. The turmoil brought upon by this pain makes the marriage suffer. Because this marriage physically causes pain, it may be hard to realize what a blessed thing it is. The pain of this marriage results in the ultimate achievement of the objective of marriage. The poem states that all the aches and pains of marriage are worth going through because the love of another is monumental. The husband and wife search in order to heal the pain within each other but cannot find it. The search for communion is an instance of sharing. Sharing both the pain as well as the joy of marriage. If both parties in a marriage share the aches of marriage, then they will not hurt nearly as bad. In order for the pain to cease, they must first face the pain with each other. By suffering through the hurdles of this institution, the pain will either bring them closer together or tear them apart. The "look for communion" (5) and sharing in the marriage is what these hurting people are searching for. After first personifying pain in a marriage as an evil state where the pain endures, Levertov shows that regardless of the hurt they can still walk "two by two in the ark of/ the ache of it" (12-13). Imagery is another literary device Levertov uses to illustrate the difficulty in maintaining a sacred institution. Levertov makes an allusion to Noah's ark by saying, "two by two in the ark of" (12). Noah's ark symbolizes to some survival and faith in one's creator. This image creates thoughts of survival of the marriage and faith in one another. This biblical image illustrates how strong the bond of marriage is for Levertov compares it to Noah's ark, which is the biblical explanation for the continuation of man. Another image Levertov conjures up is evident in lines 10-11. She says, "It is leviathan and we/ in its belly/ looking for joy, some joy/ not to be known outside it" (10-11). The comparison of marriage to a leviathan serves as a vivid image. Because the pain is comparable to a leviathan, which is an enormous, monstrous creature, at times it may seem like there is no way to conquer this hurdle. Levertov says that pain is a monster, within which the search for joy continues. There is no understanding of happiness because the marriage centers on pain. Levertov writes "The Ache of Marriage" as if someone were speaking. Her angst filled words flow similar to natural human speech just like a conversation. This poem does not use periods or any specific rhyming pattern making the ideas short and precise. The form is important because the temptation to be sing-songy is eliminated. Because the poem is written in free verse, the mood glooms with despair.

From there he volunteers to take part In a few experiments that will help condition him to turn from his violent ways. One experiment that is performed on Alex is an example of Aversion Therapy. Aversion Therapy is when a noxious or painful stimulation is applied while the patient behaves in the undesirable manner or is exposed and responding to stimulation associated with the symptom, and is discontinued when the behavior ceases or the relevant stimuli are removed (Jones, 1964). In this movie Aversion Therapy was portrayed when psychologists gave Alex a shot of experimental serum while forcing him to watch violent and disturbing images of things that he was involved in before he got arrested. The serum made Alex very sick while watching these images which later impacted the way he chose to live his life after he was cured. This is an example of Aversion Therapy. Whenever Alex was faced with a situation that involved violence he became sick which stopped him from being violent. Now although Aversion Therapy seemed to be A Clockwork Orange 3 successful at this point in the movie, it soon drove Alex crazy once he was set free and almost lead to his suicide. Alex was faced with many instances where because of his Aversion Therapy he became sick at even the thought of violence. The sickness became too great at one point and pushed Alex over the edge which made him jump out of a window, unfortunately not ending his life. This shows that in some ways Aversion Therapy can work and can cure someone of their illness, but on the other hand too much Aversion Therapy can really drive someone Insane! Human nature has long since been in question. Alex is an extremely interesting character. He is a brutal human being who evolves as a character only to fall back into his original state. Its almost as humans are a blank slate. They are subject to the environment around them and they are molded by that environment. Alex longs for power. When he has it, he wants more. Alex has an almost dictatorial presence about him. He lives a life with no discipline and unfortunately suffers the consequences. His longing for power leads to his downfall and horrific rehabilitation. Alex undergoes a terrifying reconditioning. Alex is strapped to a chair, drugged, and tortured. He is subject to the oppressive government in which he lives. Ales life takes a complete 180. Instead of being powerful, he is now powerless. Although Ales wrong doing is taken to an unimaginable extent, does he have the choice to be bad? Is the conditioning that he experiences morally right? Can people take away his free will? Free will, defined as freedom of action by Roy F. Bandmaster, is a central focus of Anthony Burgess A Clockwork Orange. Burgess decides to take a character who is, by most moral standards, evil, and transform him into the protagonist. At points in the novel, a reader forgets the horrific things that he does, and begins to feel sorry for him and the torture that he is experiencing. Alex is a tool of the government, manipulated into the person that they want him to be. He is horrifically brutalized. All of his free will is taken away. Alex is classically conditioned through the use off special drug. This drug causes him to become violently ill when witnessing, or even hinging about, violence, and specifically Ludwig Van, 9th symphony, 4th movement causes a big reaction. The conditioning was successful, and they then proceeded to release Alex back into the real world, where Alex is helpless due to his conditioning. The argument that Burgess is trying to make has nothing to do with Ales actions (Newman, Bobby 63). He is arguing that the higher power should not be allowed to take away a persons free will, no matter what their actions are. Free will is human right, that we all share. The relevance of A Clockwork Orange has not changed over time. Its principles still spark debate and discussion today as we evaluate the society that we live in. Much of what we do now, right or wrong, is unconscious. We evaluate what is beneficiary to the betterment of the individual. The dynamic of our society has created this behavior. We are subject to, and targeted for a number of uncontrollable things. Alex had control over the things that he was doing, and then it was taken away from him. We have very limited control over what we do because society takes our free will away. Behaviorism has a relation to free will. Watson view on behaviorism is Psychology should embrace behavior as its subject matter and rely on experimental observation of that subject matter as its method (Moore 451). Also Watson published his paper Psychology as the Behaviorism Views It, and in this paper he states: Psychology as the behaviorism views it is a purely objective experimental branch of natural science. Its theoretical goal is and control of behavior. Introspection forms no essential part of its methods, nor is the scientific value of its data dependent upon the readiness with which they lend themselves to interpretation in terms of consciousness (Harlem 6) the prediction Watson set the stage for behaviorism, which soon rose to dominate psychology. Even though it seems like Burgess consistency with the effectiveness of behavioral interventions didnt follow regulations, it seems as if he wanted to make a comparison with the way the government is in our lives. A Clockwork Orange is much less about violence and more Burgess reflection and evaluation on his own society. It is an extremely different and unique approach that he decides to take, and for a lot of people it is ineffective. Readers are disturbed by the graphic violence rather than sparked by his overall message. When Samuel Clemens was four years old, his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, where he spent his childhood. Clemens first approach to literature was through typesetting for a newspaper in 1851. Productivity is depending on ability, motivation and work environment. A HR generalist who has organizing ability can distribute labor’s work correctly so that they can develop their talents and promote their motivation in work. Under such positive work atmosphere, more employees will be influenced and continue work earnestly. Thus, productivity will be enhanced. Therefore, organizing ability is vital for HR generalists.

Instead of realizing the importance of their voice or their actions, they decide to suppress their own voices, choosing to bask in the glory they receive due to their performance during a game.
